Kui Xing, also known as "Kuixing," is associated with the term "Kui," meaning "first" or "leader." As the first star of the Big Dipper constellation, Kui Xing is closely linked to the highest achievers in the ancient imperial examination system, such as the "Zhuangyuan" (top scholar). Thus, Kui Xing is revered as the deity who governs academic success and is carefully worshipped by exam candidates as their protector.
In the Nanfeng Nuo dance of Jiangxi, Kui Xing's mask is exaggerated by craftsmen into a fierce figure with red hair, a blue face, and horns. During the performance, the dancer holds a writing brush in one hand and a dipper in the other, dancing vigorously while tapping the dipper with the brush and singing the "Shi Ke Di" poem. This performance reenacts the legendary scene of "Kui Xing Pointing to the Dipper," symbolizing the local students' hope for academic success and high rankings in the exams.
